The maintenance tax that was reinstated in 2016 is due this month by January 31, 2017.
At an election in 1983, voters in the District approved and passed an operations and maintenance tax of $0.25 per $100 valuation of taxable property. This tax was reduced to zero by the District in 1994. Since 1994, the District’s sole source of revenue for operations, maintenance, and capital improvements has been the water and sewer alone. This prevented the District from lowering water rates. Now faced with increasing costs and an aging system, the District has decided to reinstate the maintenance tax for 2016.
To clarify, this maintenance tax was implemented separate from and unrelated to the debt service tax levied to pay the bond that was approved as a result of the November 2015 Bond Election. This debt service tax of $0.0802 combined with the maintenance tax of $0.25 makes up the $0.3302 per $100 of taxable property value (as determined by Harris County Appraisal District). As an example, if your taxable property value is $100,000 the taxes due would be $330.20 annually.
If you have a mortgage on your home, please contact your mortgage company. You will need to let them know that there is a now a MUD tax for your water district. On the Statement that was sent to you in 2016, there is an Account Number that you will need to give to your mortgage company. In addition, visit www.bli-tax.com to view your account and find additional helpful information. It is very important that you contact your mortgage company so that your mortgage company can handle this next year and can request your tax statement directly from the Tax Assessor.
If you do not have a mortgage on your home and have not yet sent your Maintenance Tax payment in, please note that your payment is due by January 31, 2017.
