Tips to keep a healthy lawn during the summer

With the summer heat upon us, it is a great time to think about your property’s current landscape. Below you will find some helpful tips to help keep your lawn looking its best throughout the summer months.

Fertilizing Your Lawn

This is very important as the fertilizer will provide the grass with the nutrients it needs to withstand the intense heat.

Keep Soil Moist but Don’t Overwater

A good soak every 3-4 days in the morning will help plant roots dig deeper into the soil which will allow them to stay cooler. If you see any wilting plant, check the soil around the plant to see if it is damp or dry. If the plant is dry, water those specific plants again.

Mulch Your Garden

Mulch will help keep moisture in the soul, regulate the temperature, and block weed growth. 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch refreshed at least once a year.

Prune and Trim Your Trees and Shrubs

Pruning and trimming trees and shrubs is essential for healthy growth. By removing dead, damaged, diseased, or overgrown branches improves the overall structure of your plants.

Weed Control and Prevention

Weeds rapidly grow and spread in the Texas summer, staying ahead of the invasive weeds is a necessity for plant and soil health. Manual removal should be the first step, immediately after they receive any water.

For information on when to water your lawn and how much water at a time use the Water My Yard tool.

The WaterMyYard tool uses local weather data in sponsored areas to provide free weekly watering advice. This data is collected from an extensive network of weather stations and rain gauges, and, along with research-based understanding of plant water needs, allow experts to send customized weekly water advice for your specific lawn and irrigation system.
